Welcome to the Ride Drive Driving Tips area, where many of the mysteries of advanced driving methods are explained, and where some of the myths are dispelled.
As long as you are safe, you drive to a standard that is above the mimimum level required, then that is all that is necessary. What comes after that is the personal desire of the individual to develop their skills in different areas, so as to suit a particular need, or to maybe suit a particular type of vehicle, because there is no doubt that the more skills you develop the more pleasure you will get from driving. However, no matter how much training you complete, always remember this. The very best drivers are those who will believe that no matter how much they learn, no matter how experienced they become, they accept they will never know everything there is to know.
Hopefully, through this series of articles, you may develop an interest in advanced driving methods, try out new ideas and thereby taking your road driving to a whole new level. |

How often have you made a snap judgement of another person based purely upon their appearance, or because of the way they spoke, or the way in which you saw them behave? You may only have seen them for a few seconds and yet, according to you, you now know everything about them. Does this happen among drivers on the road? |

Acceleration is something that is easily taken for granted when we drive a car, but is actually something that needs to be thought about quite seriously if we are to be effective on the road. There is more to just pressing on a pedal, as this piece will demonstrate. |

The application of brakes of a vehicle actually has quite a profound effect upon its balance of that vehicle, especially when talking of where and when you apply it. Your brakes are a variable device, and not an on/off switch. Read on to see how braking can be completed more effectively. |

When it comes to steering methods it seems that everyone is keen to jump on the bandwagon and give the traditional Pull-Push method a bashing. It is the one everyone appears to want to hate, but even though it dates back to the 1930's, does it still have a place in the modern day? Julian Smith of Ride Drive investigates this method and the alternatives |

It is easy to imagine when you are driving through a bend that there are many forces acting on a vehicle, but the reality is very different. Roadcraft, the police drivers handbook, had this topic completely wrong for many years, and it is only in recent editions that it has been corrected. |

Assessing bends is probabaly one of the areas of learning advanced driving techniques that amazes our customers the most. To drive an unfamiliar winding piece of road, taking every bend at exactly the optimum speed is breathtaking. Here's how it is done. |
 |
Alternative road positioning methods for bend work many find to be a real eye-opener, and that can be taken quite literally. By placing the car in the optimum position on the road at the approach to a bend, and using the most effective driving line, will significantly enhance the ablity to corner smoothly and not to have to lose so much momentum from the overall flow of the drive. |

Do you ever get those journeys where you end up feeling totally exhausted at the other end, even though the distance travelled is not that great? Have you ever thought that if there were a way of driving that took a lot of the mundane and tedious functions out of it, how much easier life on the road could be? Click into this page and perhaps we can provide the solution. |

A customer who came out on a Ride Drive day said that as a result of his advanced driving experience he could now get to his destination more quickly by driving more slowly. Whilst this may seem to be a contradiction in terms, what he meant was that his peak speed had dropped, but his average speed had increased, making his progress much smoother and more flowing. This article shows one of the ways in which you can make this happen. |
 |
Overtaking another vehicle on a single carriageway is potentially the most danegrous amnoeuvre you can carry out on a road and yet it is one of those skilsl you need that is never taught. Therefore, the usual way people is by copying what they see others do, and as a result, often make so much hard work of it. This set of pages contains video footage to help explain. |

A Skidding situation is one that is secretly most feared by a high percentage of drivers on the UK roads. However, whereas many will drive in a manner by which they feel will keep them safe from such an experience, the reality is they will be a lot closer to dealing with a skid than they think. This article also examines the worth of completing a skid pan course. |

Aquaplaning is frightening sitation that occurs on wet roads and which is the cause of a great many road crashes. In this article the condition is explained and why aquaplaning itself isn't the cause of so many road collisions, but how it is the driver who will make it become a problem by reacting inappropriately to it.

Tyres are something that many drivers don’t really pay very much attention to, and yet their importance should never be under estimated. Complacency with tyres can kill, and that is no sweeping statement made with the intent to be dramatic, as it simply is the truth. This article provides information about what to look for on your vehicle so that you have a better idea as to whether it is safe. |

Seatbelts are part of the supplied equipment within our vehicles that we all just accept as being there, but why is it that some people make such a fuss about wearing them. There are those who will go to great lengths to avoid belting up, and if this is you then in a non patronising manner this article explains quietly the job a seat belt performs. You are then left to make up your own mind whether there is any merit in wearing one. |

Safety airbags, when fitted to motor vehicles, are what is known as a Secondary Restraint System, and often you will see the monogram SRS shown on the airbag cover. Films of crash test dummies falling onto an airbag during tests make it look all so very soreen and comfortable, but the reality is really quite different. |

On a motorway, have you encountered those who will only drive in lane-2? Have you ever thought why it is that people do this? We don't say that we have the answers here, but maybe some of what we have to say may help with your questions. We also give you advice as to how you can deal with such a situation should your way be blocked by one of these people. |
 |
One of the most common collision scenarios between cars and left-hand drive trucks, as well as tour coaches, occurs where the large vehicle is changing lane from left to right. This page explains why and gives some advice on how not to get tangled up with trucks and busses on multi-lane roads. |

When driving on a motorway have you wondered why the police patrol car that you have just seen was performing a certain manoeuvre? If you have then you will not be alone, because this is the sort of stuff that no one tells you about, and it might just be that on some occasion you could really do with understanding what it going on. |
