Allocated Time: 8–Hours 1:1
Content: Advanced Road Driver Training, Including 1–Hour Skid Control Programme
Options: Driver Risk Assessment For Discount Car Insurance

Introduction

The full–day Advanced Driving and Skid Control (skid pan) Experience is an 8–hour day of on–road one–to–one advanced driver training that is punctuated by a 1–hour skidpan, or skid car, session at one of our approved skid pan venues.

Available only in selected areas of the UK mainland, this one–to–one driving experience is nothing like a driving lesson, but completed within an atmosphere of a recreational event. It is an opportunity to understand how mismanagement of a car can get you into a skid and how much room you would need to correct a skidding situation.

The skid pan session is the only activity you will do with Ride Drive for which a vehicle is provided. Depending upon location this can be either a wet skid pan or a skid car on a frame.

Format of the Programme

You start your day in your car meeting with your Ride Drive advanced driving specialist at the agreed location. There will be a brief discussion to confirm the aims and objectives of the day and before you set off onto the road.

As you will make your way to the intended skid pan venue you will begin to develop your application of an advanced system of car control that will form the foundation of your new driving style.

For this purpose you will be guided over a route on public roads that will have been specially chosen to provide you with the best development opportunities.

For the on–road advanced driving activities of the day we tend to stay away from major trunk roads and motorways, unless otherwise requested, using the B–roads and back lanes instead.

The Full–Day Performance Car Advanced Driving and Skid Control (skid pan) Experience is available in many regions of the UK, including Aberdeen, Derby, Nottingham, Milton Keynes, London, Newbury, Slough and Reading. Click on the map above for full list of available start points.

The Skid Control Session

At the skid pan you begin with a short safety briefing and familiarising yourself with the facility. Then begins a programme of driving activities, building from some simple manoeuvres to more technical manoeuvres during which you will learn to maintain control of the car.

The purpose of the exercises will be to help you to develop an understanding of how it isn’t a slippery surface that causes you to skid, but the manner in which you drive on that surface. It also demonstrates just how much room you need to correct a skidding situation. Room you don’t have on the public road.

We talk about the causes of skidding and about the adverse effects of inappropriate driving will have upon the behaviour of the car. Everything we practice at the skidpan has a direct relationship with how you make safe progress on the public road.

Following the completion of the skidpan session you will rejoin the public road, and again over a specifically chosen route, you may your way back to the start point. It will be during the closing stages of the day when you will notice home much smoother you drive your car and how much more in control of it you feel.

Who Should Complete This Option

The Full–Day Advanced Driving and Skid Control Experience is best suited to the performance car driver, or sports car driver, who is looking to satisfy their enthusiasm to apply effective road driving methods. It is for those who wish to improve their level of driver safety by developing their personal performance that is closer to that that of their car.

Whilst it may not be possible to cover every aspect of advanced driving methods in just one day, the allocated time does allow for the application of many on–road strategies and to achieve a high level of competency. Certainly, there is a lot to pack into a day.
