On this page there is access to a video clip that explians how to go about producing an effective overtaking manoeuvre. It features Roger, a Ride Drive customer, who is developing his overtaking skills, and as you will see, he has to work quite hard to find a safe opportunity to execute the actual passing manoeuvre.
In the opening scene, Roger has caught up with a line of three vehicles, the one immediately ahead being a grey Mazda, and he has to work hard to create visual opportunities to seek out a point on the road at which he can overtake.
The video is played twice, once in slow motion, during which the action is periodically paused whilst the narration explains what is happening at each stage. The scond showing of the footage is run in real time, so you can see how the explained techniques and procedures all fit together.
A factor in this sequence that is worthy of note is that when there is no immediate overtaking opportunity, such as whilst driving through sections of road controlled by double solid centre white line systems, Roger gives ground to the vehicle ahead so as not to appear aggressive or overbearing, and to maintain a safe separation distance. This is not only appropriate for safety reasons, but also good strategy from a third party perception point of view
